Howdy ho, my SEO friends! Have you heard of Google Authorship? No? Well, sit down and follow along with Search Engine Academy and learn how to harness this powerful SEO process that’s under-utilized and poorly understood. This is so cool and powerful, it’s now part of our SEO training!

Google Authorship is fairly new. It’s been around for about a year plus now, but it’s been slow to catch on. For my clients and attendees who have tried everything but still are not ranking as well as they could be, I tell them to make Google Authorship a priority. And if their competition isn’t doing it, this gives them an edge.

What is Google Authorship?

What is this Google Authorship thing anyways?

Well, it’s the process of creating a byline, linking this byline and your content to your Google Plus page, verifying the whole mess, then you start creating and publishing optimized content to rank well in search engine results pages (SERPs).

Why do this? For one thing, if you’re cranking out great content on a regular basis, why the hell don’t you establish yourself as an authority on your subject matter while you’re at it? This is what Google Authorship can do for you, SEO peeps. Your byline and photo shows up in SERPs. It’s pretty impressive!

If a searcher keeps coming back search results that have author-tagged content, Google will start putting more of the writer’s articles in the SERPs. What a great way to get your past articles and posts visibility, eh? Not only that, but if you’ve survived Google Panda, Google Penguin and zombies (kidding on this last one!), this will reward you even more.

Who Should Incorporate Google Authorship?

Anyone who blogs regularly, is an online news reporter, or creates new content pages ON A REGULAR BASIS should add this to their website. If you are allowed to create a byline and you write diligently, you are a prime candidate for Google Authorship.

OK, so how do you get started? First, if you haven’t already, create a Google Plus page. Log in with your Google account, or create one, if you haven’t already. Create your page and make it a nice one – optimize with a keyword phrase you want to rank for. Your tagline and introduction are the best places to do this.

Select a decent picture of yourself as your profile photo. For “Profile discovery,” be sure you make your profile visible in search – in other words, public.

In “Other profiles,” link to all of the places you create content to, as well as in the “Contributor to” section. You also have a “Links” section, so be sure to add some high quality stuff there as well.

Once you create your profile, you’ll need to take note of the unique profile number assigned to you. At the top, click on “View As” and select Public. Now, look at the URL up in the browser bar. You’ll see a hideously long number. Copy this URL and keep it handy, because this is what you use to establish your Google Authorship, umkay?

Now, Google being Google, you need to have a verified digital identity. Don’t panic – this is going to be your Google Plus profile page.

There are three ways you can get Google’s verified trust:

  • 3-Link Method
  • 2-Link Method
  • Email Verification Method
